Psalm Muzik Shares Why He Makes Music

What Perspective Do You Bring To Your Music?

I grew up in Boise, Idaho. My parents were both Christians, but my father struggled with addiction for as long as I can remember, and I followed in his footsteps, getting into drugs and alcohol at an early age. I basically ran amok throughout my juvenile years, constantly in trouble with the law. I developed addictions that took me years to get over, some that I still struggle with in one form or another to this day. Looking back, I basically made as many wrong choices as I could, partly because in my circle of friends that seemed to be the thing to do.

What Brought You Into Music?

I fell in love with rap music at an early age. My oldest brother (12 years older than me) introduced me to that style of music. I remember hearing the Doggystyle album by Snoop Dogg and I was instantly hooked. I also began playing piano at a fairly early age, which gave me some knowledge on music theory and composition. I began recording music at the age of 13, although it wasn’t any good, and continued through into adulthood.

How Has Your Music Career Evolved?

I was a secular artist for almost a decade, and got quite a few accolades under the moniker ‘Sketchy Waze’. I toured the country with my music and got to work with many artists who I had idolized as a kid. The thing is, with all that success, I never felt fulfilled as a musician. In fact, every success left me hungrier for the next one. I was consumed with this idea of gaining worldwide recognition for my craft, and ended up sacrificing every moral fiber of my being in pursuit of it.

I met my wife at the age of 18, and got her pregnant within months of knowing her. Although we stayed together, I was not the best husband. I left her and my son on the backburner in many ways while I went out chasing my dreams. It was at the end of 2013 that it all came to a head. She left me for another man. It was then that God got ahold of me. Through earnest prayer, I felt like God wanted me to walk away from my secular music career to discover my faith and to recover my family.

Although it seemed like my marriage was hopeless, God put it in my heart that he would restore my relationship with my wife. In return, he wanted me to give my family and my pursuits all to him. Life has never been the same!

What Lead You To Create DEATHPROOF?

I walked away from music for several years and then came back with my debut LP ‘Covenant‘. I was quickly shown that the way I had conducted my music business before was not what God wanted for this new venture. So I have given it all to him, being intentionally unambitious with my music. Where I used to spend virtually every hour of every day trying to kick down doors to gain recognition, now I pray and wait on God to open doors for me. And he certainly has!

I have had the opportunity to work with some phenomenal artists and producers. I released my second album, DEATHPROOF, in October of this year, and it has gotten really good responses. Like all the music I’ve released since giving my life to God, it is just honest expressions of my journey as a believer.

It is not always positive music because life is not always positive. But the common theme is redemption, grace and second chances. I feel like that is the message I want to convey to people. You don’t have to be perfect, you don’t have to sugar coat your life. God loves us just where we are, in the middle of our iniquity and wrongdoings. That is the very reason for Jesus Christ.

I pray that this project will continue to bless those who hear it and hopefully inspire others to come before God in open, honest and transparent prayer. He can put our broken pieces together again. And what’s more, he can make us DEATHPROOF!
