Top 25 CHH Artists – October 2015

top25

This month features the biggest shakeups since the creation of these rankings. Not only did artists move all over in the bottom and middle of the rankings, but we have a new leader as well. Here’s some of the highlights before we move into all the numbers.

Both John Givez and Marty of Social Club debut on the rankings this month after releasing their respective projects this past month (plus a few days as Givez’s was released in the final days of August). Both projects were very successful, and Marty even beat out his own group, Social Club… for now. Andy Mineo’s new album pushed him past both NF and Lecrae into first place. He’s the first artist to beat Lecrae since the beginning of these rankings.

Besides the debuts, Dee-1 saw the biggest jump, as an increase in listeners pulled him up to 15th, up from 21st last month. This may be due to the publicity from his cancelled counter-Lil Wayne mixtape.

Viktory and Tragic Hero were knocked out of the top 25 this month due to the debuts.

John Givez’s Soul Rebel album turned a lot of heads.  He’s a talented artist with a ton of potential.  The album didn’t appear on the Billboard rankings, but people are listening, and that’s earned him a very high spot on his debut.  We’ll have to see if he can hold onto it though.

Most Recent Album/EP: Marty For President (Sep. 2015)

Rap Albums Chart Peak: 7
Christian Albums Chart Peak: 1
Last Month’s Rank: N/A (Debut EP)

Marty of Social Club storms into the top 10 of the rankings for at least one month after his debut EP, Marty For President. He isn’t expected to make any other solo projects anytime soon, but it’s safe to say he’s definitely making an impact as a part of Social Club (ranked 9th) as well as a solo artist. It will be interesting to see where he stacks up once his EP has been out for a full month.

3. Lecrae – Reach Records

Listeners Rank: 3
Most Recent Album/EP: Anomaly (Oct. 2014)
Billboard 200 Peak: 1 (On chart for 27 weeks)
Rap Albums Chart Peak: 1 (On chart for 46 weeks)
Christian Albums Chart Peak: 1 (Currently on chart for its 55th week)
Last Month’s Rank: 1

The biggest surprise of the month lies right here. Lecrae has been the unchallenged number 1 in CHH for a long time, and he’s led since the beginning of our rankings as well. Things have changed this month as Andy Mineo, as predicted, surged with his new album, and NF continues to impress, surpassing Lecrae for the first time.

2. NF – Capitol Christian Music Group

Listeners Rank: 1
Most Recent Album/EP: Mansion (Mar. 2015)
Billboard 200 Peak: 62
Rap Albums Chart Peak: 9 (On chart for 11 weeks)
Christian Albums Chart Peak: 1 (Currently on chart for its 21st week)
Last Month’s Rank: 2

NF actually had the most listeners this month, but that was due to the fact Andy Mineo’s album was not released until later in the month. Still, he surpassed Lecrae for the first time, and he will likely remain at least third, because his Mansion album is showing no signs of slowing down.

1. Andy Mineo – Reach Records

Listeners Rank: 2 (Album was released this month, so not full month of data)
Most Recent Album/EP: Uncomfortable (Sep. 2015)
Billboard 200 Peak: 10 (Currently on chart for its 1st week)
Rap Albums Chart Peak: 3 (Currently on chart for its 1st week)
Christian Albums Chart Peak: 1 (Currently on chart for its 1st week

For the first time on the CHH Top 25, someone has taken first place away from Lecrae. Andy Mineo’s Uncomfortable album has had a great response, shown by the Billboard data as well as the fact he almost had the most listens after less than two full weeks since the album was released. He didn’t match Lecrae’s number one on the Billboard 200, but he surged to the top of the Christian rankings and only missed the top of the rap rankings because Mac Miller and the duo of Drake and Future released albums. Still, it was an album that pushed him to the top of our rankings, and it’ll be fun to watch how long he can stay there.

Methodology

These rankings are compiled using data from a variety of sources. Spotify’s public numbers provide the backbone of the rankings. We use these numbers to see the number of listeners per month. We also factor in data from the Billboard rankings as well as how recently the artist released their album. The more recent the album release, the larger the bonus in the rankings they receive. The goal from this is to provide an objective set of rankings based off of available data. An artist’s top 5 songs are given a bonus and the next 5 are used in a less weighted way to compile the backbone of the data. Features and tracks released before 2012 are also considered, but they are given much less weight. If you have any further questions feel free to comment below.
